What is the RSV vaccine?

The RSV vaccine protects against Respiratory Syncytial Virus. This virus can be responsible for coughs and colds in people of all ages, however can pose serious risks to young children and older adults.

The RSV Vaccine - FAQs

  • The RSV vaccine, when given to individuals over the age of 60 years, is expected to last at least 2 years. As the vaccine is quite new, we are still learning how long it is effective for. As soon as more information is available, we’ll update this page.

    We would recommend you get the vaccine at the start of the Winter season, so it’s efficacy covers you for the time when RSV infections are most prevalent.

  • The Abrysvo vaccine is available for those who:

    • pregnant individuals to protect their infants from birth through 6 months of age

      or

    • individuals 60 years of age and older.

  • People over the age of 60 are more at risk of serious complication from RSV infections, so it is generally recommended that people in this group should get an RSV vaccine.

    Pregnant people between 28 and 36 weeks of pregnancy can also be vaccinated, which will protect infants during the time they are most vulnerable to complications from RSV infections (birth to six months).

  • Yes. Vaccines are never 100% effective for everyone, but having an RSV vaccine does reduce the chance of you or your child getting RSV.

  • Yes. You can still contract RSV and a number of other respiratory infections even with the RSV vaccine.

    Washing your hands regularly, covering your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze, throwing awayused tissues and avoiding high risk groups when you’re unwell, are all ways to prevent becoming ill and spreading illness.

  • Many people are eligible for the RSV vaccine through the NHS. We recommend you contact your GP or local health authority for more information.

    If you want the vaccine on the NHS, we unfortunately are unable to assist with this as we are a fully private pharmacy, so you will have to speak to your GP.

  • For each visit you need, you’ll have:

    • A full consultation with the pharmacist, who will assess the suitability of the vaccine for you and be able to answer any questions you may have

    • The vaccine prescribed by the pharmacist

    • A patient-information leaflet from the manufacturers of the vaccine

    • The vaccine administered by the pharmacist

    • A comprehensive follow-up document which details the specifics of the vaccine(s) for your information, and for you to forward to your GP

  • The RSV vaccination service costs £238 per person.
